To What Extent Do You Think the Hong Kong Political System is Hindering the Citizens' Socio-Political Participation?

To a large extent, I think the Hong Kong political system is inspiring the citizen’s socio-political participation. For the meaning of the socio-political participation, it is the extent and pattern of participation in social welfare, also the allocation of the resources. And I am going to discuss this problem in three aspects: social, cultural and political.

First, for the social aspect there are many freedoms for citizens. Such as the freedom of speech and freedom of communication ext. it is also the characteristic of the Hong Kong political system. These freedoms give us rights to voice out our own opinions and give advices to the government. In order to let the government listen to know what we needs, citizens can have assembly to protest for their rights. Government don’t set up laws to stop from having assembly shows that government has the needs in these assembly, and inspired people’s participation.

Second, for the cultural aspect, people want to have their own right to vote in the election in order to participate more. The Legislative Council contains members of geographical and functional constituencies, as we will voice out our opinions by demonstrations to fight for universal suffrage. This shows that the government inspired us to fight for more voting right. The government still thinks of universal suffrage and finds different way to make it true. Government hope to let us have our own choices, not control our voting right.

Third, for the political aspect, although people said that the CE is elected by the election board only and appointed by the CPG, as average citizens have no voting right, it hindered people’s participation. But the system has already includes the right to vote and stand for election. This encourages us to participate in the different level of election, such as: the legislation council and the district council.

Finally, based on the above reasons I think that our government’ political system is inspiring us to participate in the society. And share our opinions with the government.
