Workshop Response Guide for Wikipedia Fact Check Essay

Reading your partner’s paper:

Read the draft through once without making any marks. After you are done, write1-2 sentences of a “first impression” of the paper, including what you think its main idea is, what the strongest part is, and what needs the most improvement. Then, after a break, reread the draft carefully, making ONLY the following marks. Draw a check mark near sentences that you feel are particularly effective. Draw a squiggly line under awkwardly phrased sentences and phrases whose meanings are unclear. Write marginal notes to your partner about anything that confuses you.

Giving Positive Feedback: After another break, re-read the draft a third time. What do you see as the strength(s) of the paper at this stage?

Defining Ideas: In your own words, what is this paper about? What is its idea? Don’t assume that the writer knows what his or her own essay is about. Mistrust the stated thesis, if there is one, and look at what the essay actually does.

Making suggestions for revision: Nancy Sommers, a writing scholar who teaches and researches at Harvard, has found that when experienced writers revise, they often radically alter their ideas and reorganize entire essays. By contrast, when student writers revise, they change a few words here and there but leave the essay essentially unaltered. Help your partner become an experienced writer! She or he has plenty of time to revise, so you can make comments that direct a true revision.

Look at Kerry Walk’s writing lexicon, identify two elements you think your partner should focus on when revising, and discuss these in relation to the draft in your response. Try to point to specific sentences and paragraphs whenever possible. Include these comments in the letter to your partner.

The in-class workshop: You will be given most of the class period to workshop. You should spend at least 30 minute on each draft – if you are in groups of 3, spend at least 20 minutes on each draft. Be expansive, thoughtful and considerate in your comments. Rather than passively letting your partner read your letter, begin the discussion by talking about the sections of the letter you wrote: what is the essay about, what are its strengths, what should the focus in revision be. Be sure to leave time for your partner to ask questions of you.
