Reaction Paper on the Effects of Smoking and Health

Reaction Paper on Smoking

The lecture held on the 27th October 2010 about smoking. This lecture was divided into 4 sub lectures that highlight the effects of smoking on the health.

Starting by the first one, the lecturer stressed on three main components of smoking: Attitude, habitude and dependence. Initially, we can identify a pre-smoker through his attitude, seeing as a beginning of smoking. In other words, the pre-smoker tempts to adopt the “adults’ model”. Knowing that a great many of adults tend to smoke, teenagers feel tempted to incorporate their “fancy” attitude, as they may believe. Then, the first cigarette tasted stimulates the desire to smoke other ones. Consequently, smoking turns into a habit and therefore it becomes very difficult to quit! This is what leads ultimately to what is known as a kind of “slavery” or addiction. In other words, the smoker becomes gradually addicted to cigarette until he reaches the higher stage of addiction, when it is too late to go backwards. We may wonder what arouses this addiction.

In fact, inside the cigarette we can compute 4000 chemical products, including thirty ones that are very harmful and dangerous for health! They affect gradually the lungs and attain the other organs. Smoking may cause various cancers such as the pancreas one. Also, we should bring up that radioactivity is one of the most hazardous elements contained in the cigarette! The cigarette itself gives birth to highly toxic gases such as CO (carbon monoxide), as well as poisonous substances such as nicotine. Thus, numerous diseases may result. For instance, heart diseases could show up afterwards!

The second lecture that took place the same day was about the consumption of drugs. According to the lecturer, the civilizations share one thing in common: “they wish if one day they could propel themselves into the world of spirits”. For that, they figured out a way: “through these exhilarating substances that are drugs, they can escape from the reality to transfer in a sort of immaterial world”.

Hence, through several researches, scientists identified two types of drugs: licit that consists of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit including cannabis, cocaine, heroin and morphine. As said by the second lecturer, some people resort to drugs because they are regarded as a king of refuge that helps to forget life issues and seek for the satisfaction that people are not able to find in the tangible world. Through two scientific phenomenons that have been defined previously, people addicted to drugs can savor the feeling of euphoria. These phenomena are the followings: “the tolerance phenomena”, in which a person addicted to drugs is in quest of the sensation felt the first time when consuming drugs, and “the dependence phenomena”, the impulsive seeking for drugs. Consequently, people who consume drugs may feel relaxed and fearless. When referring to a representative number of teenagers as a target sample, the lecturer affirmed that among 22,1% of young adults ( between 15-35 years old) who start smoking or use to smoke, 8.7% consume cannabis drug. The previous percentage encompasses 6.5% who consume heroine as well as cocaine. In fact, this excessive dependence noticed from young adults has an explanation: our brain include a “reward system” that stimulates the activity of “dopamine”, a substance that provides a sensation of ecstasy!

The third lecture covered the effects of cigarette on pregnant women. According to different studies made about smoking, it has been scientifically proved that nicotine is a mortal substance transmitted to the fetus. Moreover, smoker mothers could give birth to children with various diseases such as asthma! Not only smoking affects born children, but it affects also mothers! Undeniably, we can compute several effects on the smoker mother; for example, smoking could lead to infertility, the increase in premature births among women, early menopause and many other serious problems!

Last but not least, smoking could damage the immune system. Indeed, when the immune system starts getting weaker, the risks of stimulating tumors become higher! To conclude, cigarette is detrimental for health! Smoking may harm many organs and kill! Therefore, as stated in the lecture: “Even though tobacco kills the half of its loyal consumers, it could be a warning so as to keep away from death”! In other words, people shall stay away from smoking!
