Many people know about the first president George Washington, but how much do the people know about his wife Martha? Martha Dandridge Curtis Washington was born on June 2, 1731. At eighteen she married Daniel Parke Curtis who died a sudden death a few years later. Following this Martha met George Washington. They soon were married in 1759. Later George became the leader of the Continental Army. When George traveled to all the war sites Martha traveled with him and she helped him as much as she could. Martha Washington influenced the Revolutionary war for man reasons.
Since Martha Washington had such a great family life it impacted how she treated others during the American Revolution. Before Martha Washington married George Washington, she married Daniel Parke Curtis. In 1757, Daniel Parke Curtis died of a sudden illness. Daniel was a very rich man. He left Martha with all of his money and one fifth of his land. He also left Martha one of the richest women of that time.

Since Martha Washington was such a great nurturer to her children it really changed how she treated people during the American Revolution. In all Martha Washington had four children. They were all with Daniel Parke Curtis. Their names were John(Jacky), Martha(Patsy), Frances, and Daniel. Daniel and Frances died at a young age in 1757. After the deaths of Daniel and Frances Martha spoiled Jacky and Patsy. She bought them whatever they wanted (Colonial Williamsburg). In 1773, Patsy died of “fits” (Truman). Martha Washington also raised her two grandchildren. Their names were Eleanor Parke Curtis and George Washington Parke Curtis. Both of her grandchildren stayed with Martha even when their parents didn’t. Martha always cared for her children and grandchildren.

Soon after Daniel Parke Curtis died Martha met George Washington who would soon become the general of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Martha and George got married in 1759. After they married, Martha moved all of her children and belongings to Mount Vernon. Martha loved Mount Vernon as soon as she arrived there. As Martha and George started getting settled the Revolutionary war started. The war ended up being very hard on their marriage.

One of the first places Martha traveled during the Revolutionary was Cambridge. She was there for the whole winter of 1775. The main reason Martha Washington traveled to Cambridge was so that she could be with George. In Cambridge there were many elegant mansions that Martha loved. She even got the chance to stay in one. One way Martha Washington helped George during the war was by helping him choose his war tactics and telling him her opinion (Colonial Williamsburg). Martha stayed in Cambridge for a very short time before she started traveling again.

After staying in Cambridge, George and Martha traveled to Morristown New Jersey where she had a big impact on how George and the soldiers acted during the American Revolution. The number one reason Martha traveled to Cambridge was to nurse George back to health. At this time George Washington became ill. Martha spent all of her time taking care of him. Eventually, George got better and Martha spent all of her time taking care of the house. Soon Martha left Morristown for her next destination.

In 1778 Martha traveled to Valley Forge, which was a main war site of the American Revolution. There she helped George Washington ant the soldiers though the harsh winter weather. Martha came to Valley Forge so she wouldn’t loose touch with George Washington and all of the soldiers that she had become friends with. At Valley Forge Martha stayed at all of the official campsites with him. At Valley Forge Martha started George’s presidential campaign because she thought it was a good idea at the time (Grolier).

After Martha left Valley Forge she went back to Mount Vernon which was her favorite of all the American Revolution sites. Martha stayed at Mount Vernon the longest. She even died there. It was Martha’s Favorite place because it was always quiet (Historic). It also was the happiest time of her life. When Martha was at Mount Vernon she freed all of her slaves (Grolier). She also cured many soldiers of their illnesses.

Martha Washington was one of the richest women during the American Revolution (America’s). She always had lots of money. During the Revolutionary war was the time that Martha Washington had the least money. She gave lots of it away. Martha also spent a significant amount of money on food and materials for soldiers. During the American Revolution Martha made a big impact on soldiers. Martha always made them happy by bringing them big carriages of food and sweets (Rubel, David 11). They also thought of Martha as a hero because she always cared for the soldiers before herself. All of the soldiers loved Martha so much they called her “Lady Washington”(Virtualolgy). Martha ad mired the soldiers as well. She even decided to join them in a few battles and help them try to win the war (Rubel, David 12).

Martha Washington was very helpful during the American Revolution. One way Martha was helpful was by mending and making clothing. In the middle of the war, Martha Washington started a sewing circle where she and wives of other soldiers and officers made clothing (Virtualolgy). Martha Washington also visited hospital tents. There she helped wounded or sick soldiers back to health. Martha was also an expert in wrapping wounds. Another way Martha Washington was helpful during the war was by making food for soldiers (Zienert, Karen 22).

Martha Washington was very helpful and supportive of George Washington during the war but when it came time for him to become president she did not want to be first, First Lady. Martha always hesitated and tried to ignore George. Martha said that being first, First lady made her exhausted all the time (Historic). Martha got use to being first, First lady after a while but she never loved it. Martha was extremely sad most of her time as first, First lady. She also claimed that she was very lonely (Encyclopedia Americana) After a while Martha got so sad that it made her ill.

During Martha’s time as first, First Lady and during the American Revolution Martha accomplished many tasks. One of her major accomplishments was hosting dinner parties. Every week Martha would host a minimum of two dinner parties. At first it was hard for Martha, but then she got help from one of her good friends, Abigail Adams.

Martha Washington had a big impact on the Revolutionary War for many reasons. She traveled with George to the camps and helped him as much as she could. Martha also gave away lots of money, took care of her children and grandchildren and also managed to entertain others. She helped and was loved by many soldiers. Martha also knew how to make clothing, wrap wounds, and nurse soldiers. These are some of he reasons why people look at Martha Washington as one of the great women of the American Revolution.
