The Bodies Use of Free Fatty Acids (FFA) in Fed and Fasted States

I think I will learn about the bodies use of FFA in the fed and fasted states. I will learn how FFA’s can dictate insulin secretion. The relationship between FFA and insulin secretion seems to be the focus of the article. FFA’s allow an important step in glucose secretory process to take place, because without it the insulin levels tend to be out of control.

Vocabulary
Ablation- describes a gene that has been silenced for purpose of experimentation.
Bolus- The administration of a medication, or drug to make a compound easier to test in a lab.
Secretagogues- Cause substances to be secreted.
Insulin secretagogues- Trigger insulin secretion by direct action on the K(ATP) channel.
Nonglucose secretagogues- Trigger insulin secretion without any direct action from the K(ATP) channel.
Perfused- The process of nutrient delivery of arterial blood to tissue.

Introduction:
1. What is the overall purpose of the research? The purpsose of the research is to “understand the importance of fatty acids in the regulation of pancreatic Beta cell fuction”.(2371)
2. How does the research fit into the context of its field? Is it, for example, attempting to settle a controversy? Show the validity of a new technique? Open up a new field of inquiry? It appears that the research is attempting to pen a new field of inquiry by showing high fat foods are not sufficient when the body is in the fasted state. The body can better utilitze the FFA when it is fed. The Free Fatty Acids are able to compensate for a deficit of insulin in the fed state, but not in the fasted state.
3. Do you agree with the author’s rationale for studying the question in this way? I’m not sure what I think about this. He obviously has good intentions. It sounds like he is stating the obvious. The diets of poor people lead them to diabetes. The eat highly dense foods and are more likely to fast.
Methods:
1. Were the measurements appropriate for the questions the researcher was approaching? The measurements were not appropriate. More rats should have been used.
2. Often researchers need to use “indicators” because they cannot measure something directly—for example, using babies’ birthweight to indicate
nutritional status. Were the measures in this research clearly related to the variables in which the researchers (or you) were interested? The measurements were appropriate. They showed that FFA increased insulin levels more than glucose did.
3. If human subjects were studied, do they fairly represent the population under study? There were not enough subjects in this experiment. In addition, this study would not account for the predetermined genetic disposition that some cultures have for high fat foods. Those who have been consuming high fat foods for years have adapted to the diet.
Results:
1. What is the one major finding? One step is responsible for both glucose and noglucose insulin secretion.
2. Were enough of the data presented so that you feel you can judge for yourself how the experiment turned out? No! I can’t see the long term implications of data clearly.
3. Did you see patterns or trends in the data that the author did not mention? Were there problems that were not addressed? I feel like everything was addressed, but things were avoided. Why does the study have such a small survey population and so many variables?
Discussion:
1. Do you agree with the conclusions drawn from the data? Yes, I think they is going in the right direction, but they need to be more clear wiith their implications.
2. Are these conclusions over-generalized or appropriately careful? See above: These conclusions are overly generalized.
3. Are there other factors that could have influenced, or accounted for, the results? There are no other factors that I can think of.
4. What further experiments would you think of, to continue the research or to answer remaining questions? They should conduct this study on people. High fat foods and their affect on fed and fasted people should be the premis.
